Postpartum Depression

What is Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression is a type of depression that affects new mothers after childbirth. It can occur in the first few weeks or months after giving birth and is different from the "baby blues," which many new mothers experience for a few days after delivery.

Postpartum depression is believed to be caused by a combination of hormonal changes, genetic factors, and psychological and social factors. The symptoms of postpartum depression can include sadness, anxiety, irritability, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and difficulty bonding with the baby.

Treatment for postpartum depression can include therapy, medication, or a combination of both. It is important for women to seek help from a healthcare professional if they are experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression, as it can have negative effects on both the mother and the baby's wellbeing. Support from family and friends, as well as self-care activities, such as exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough rest, can also be helpful.
